School is still in session in many parts of the country, and high school students are probably thinking more about what they’re going to do over the summer than they are about their college applications in the fall. But it’s always good to think ahead and starting planning. The University of California has just announced that the prompts for the UC personal statements will not change for the Fall of 2013. Well, if you are a rising high school senior (class of 2013), and you’re planning to apply to the University of California, that means you’ll be writing on the same topics that last year’s applicants wrote on. In a nutshell, there are two prompts (paraphrased—be sure to check the official UC website for exact instructions): As I mentioned above, these prompts are unchanged from previous years, so there are no surprises here—the UCs still want to know about you, your life, your “world”, and something special about you. This will give you the chance to talk yourself up a bit and explain anything special you’ve done in your life. I’ve helped hundreds of people with their application essays, including the essays for the UCs and will be writing about how to approach writing these essays in the future.

If you’re interested in tech, entrepreneurship and innovation, Haas is one of the best schools in the world for an MBA. The highly selective program, which enrolls a small class of 240 full-time MBAs each fall, is anchored by 12 required courses that promote a general-management perspective and that provide a framework for the more function-specific courses that follow. The first year of the program is divided into four quarters.

The UC schools attempt to admit California students in the top 1/8th of their graduating classes; the CSU schools attempt to enroll students in the top 1/3rd of their classes. Special Considerations with UC/CSU applications Something that out-of-state applicants need to be aware of is that both systems have very small windows for applying: the applications open on October 1 and close on November 30. Because of the 3 tiered system, the UC schools are considered the research universities, awarding BA, MA and Ph Ds; the CSU system focuses on teaching, awarding BA and MA degrees, and the Community Colleges award two year degrees as a stepping-stone to either the UC or CSU system. Notes on the two systems In the 3 tiered state public education system, the UC schools and CSU schools give admissions preference to students transferring from California Community Colleges. The currently un-impacted campuses include: Bakersfield, Channel Islands, Dominguez Hills, East Bay, Maritime, Monterey, Stanislaus. To apply to be a California college student in a California state college, you need to understand the difference between the three-tier public education systems in Cali: the UC system, the Cal State system, and the California Community Colleges.
